On the Carnic Alps, between Veneto and Friuli, one of the last natural rivers in Europe is born: the Tagliamento. For much of its course, the river has maintained its natural characteristics, without human intervention. Really a pity that the Tagliamento cycle path (FVG 6) has not yet been completed! I guarantee you that pedaling along the banks of this waterway, not without reason considered "the King of Alpine Rivers" is an unforgettable experience.

The first part of this route takes place in a grandiose environment, among the forests of the Carnic mountains surrounded by the imposing walls of the Friulian Dolomites. We start pedaling from the Mauria Pass following the Regional Road 52 (Carnica) and after a bend you will find the sign indicating the source of the Tagliamento.

You pass the picturesque villages of Forni di Sopra and di Sotto and of Ampezzo almost always pedaling on the regional road without any official sign indicating the route to cyclists.

From Socchieve it is possible to continue on roads with little traffic (but not yet signposted) and from Villa Santina you cycle to Tolmezzo following the cycling routes of the Carnic mountains (FVG 8/a).

Once you have passed Tolmezzo and the bridge over the Tagliamento river, you will finally find the cycle path with the official FVG 6 signposting that leads to Cavazzo Carnico along a path that is sometimes challenging due to the sudden climbs and descents. Beyond Cavazzo the (former) cycle path is really very beautiful and pleasant to ride.

Beyond Pioverno (Venzone) the official signaling disappears again. It is advisable to continue southwards touching Bordano and Trasaghis where you will find the signs of the FVG 3 (Pedemontana cycle path) which we will follow up to Valeriano where you follow the stickers that indicate the FVG 6 route to take us to Spilimbergo.

Still following these stickers, you descend following the dirt roads that run mainly along the banks of the Tagliamento up to Ponte Delizia, just beyond the beautiful medieval village of Valvasone.

Cross the river on the busy bridge of the "Pontebbana" state road (SS13) and continue along the left bank of the river to Canussio where the official signs of the cycling route finally appear.

The final stretch of the route has recently been completed by creating new sections of the cycle path that often run over the embankments and placing the signposting. We pass Latisana and Pertegada and finally we arrive at the mouth between Lignano and Bibione.

Finally, I would like to point out the official website of the Ciclovia del Tagliamento where you will find more information and updates on this suggestive cycle path: https://www.furlancycling.com/cicloviafvg6
